ABOUT
THE OKOTOKS
RIVER DISTRICT
The River District Business Association is trailblazing in the footsteps of the pioneers who recognized something magical lying below the escarpment along the fertile banks of Sheep River. Those first homesteaders set down roots and built Stopping Houses for weary stagecoach travellers on the Macleod Trail and was soon followed by the railway that shipped lumber, coal and cattle.
By 1907, with a population of only 500, you could leave your horse to be shod at the blacksmith, get a newspaper at the tobacconist, buy and sell clothing, cattle, dry goods and land, get a haircut at the barber, see the doctor, go to the bank, eat a pastry and be home by dinner.
Today, that entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in our business community, who deliver not just the goods and services we need, but also, create jobs and generate much needed tax revenue to sustain our community.
The RDBA believes that the heart and lifeblood of a community is its downtown. It’s not only where we work, shop and eat; it’s also where we gather to celebrate traditions, enjoy events and strengthen the bonds of our community.
Like many towns, ours has navigated booms and busts, experienced growing pains and embraced growth and people from around the world. The new River District is a reflection of those changes, as we now represent the business community from Motion Fitness to the Dawgs Stadium, the escarpment to the River.
Our Vision is a thriving Downtown that is rich in products, services and experiences, not just for our community, but visitors as well. And our organization will engage its diverse membership, build relationships, share success stories, work together to find innovative solutions and be a constructive voice at the communal table.
Okotoks survived the Province bypassing us with Highway 2 in the 50s, floods, the oil and gas industry contraction, and now the Covid-19 Pandemic. Never before have we been so tested. Now, more than ever before, is the time to roll up our sleeves, work together and emerge stronger as a community.
